LOS ANGELES, CA — May 29, 2026. Artist Safespaces, a community organization building public creative infrastructure, has announced its 3rd Annual Art Therapy: The Mental Health Festival. The free event will take place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at IKEA Costa Mesa, transforming the retail parking lot and cafe into an interactive sanctuary designed to support mental well-being and transform isolation into artistic connection.

The festival is spearheaded by Artist Safespaces Founder and Executive Director Salina Mendoza, whose path bridges event marketing, live-event tech architecture, and fine art curation. At just 19 years old while in college, Mendoza was a lead field ambassador helping manage Vitaminwater's grassroots Los Angeles field campaigns, working on-site at high-profile VIP activations like the Emmys. She later transitioned into tech product leadership at Paciolan, where she served as the Senior Product Manager for Inventory Management and Maps, completely reimagining legacy venue inventory and interactive seat map experiences for live-event ticketing nationwide.

Fourteen years later, Mendoza is applying those exact same crowd-gathering, experiential tactics alongside her background in tech and spatial architecture to support mental health awareness.

"When I was 19, I was learning how to coordinate event logistics on the streets of LA, and later as a Senior Product Manager at Paciolan, I was designing the digital maps that help millions of people access physical live events. Today, with Artist Safespaces, we are taking those same spatial architecture and grassroots tactics and applying them to mental health awareness. By partnering with IKEA Costa Mesa, we are demonstrating how commercial spaces can temporarily serve as vital community 'third spaces' offering free mental health resources, bringing people together, and providing fair-market compensation to local working artists."

The 2026 festival follows Mendoza's solo museum exhibition, 1491: Taíno Alive, at the Fullerton Museum Center, which explored identity and emotional resilience.

This year's festival centers around the theme of Understanding and explores the core question: What do you think people get wrong about you? Supported by featured partner Art Supply Warehouse, the 3rd Annual Art Therapy Festival features an interactive lineup:

The Frame & Signed Print Experience (with On-Site Assembly)

Serving as the official visual print designer for the festival, prominent muralist Speczacular has created a limited run of only 100 exclusive fine art prints, hand-numbered and signed. Available strictly on a first-come, first-served basis, attendees who purchase any frame from IKEA during the event will receive a print for free. Eliminating all customer hassle, the IKEA team will assemble the frame with the print on-site for customers.

Live Interactive Murals & Public Art Giveaway

Three prominent Southern California muralists (Speczacular, Rebekah Rose, and SIINCERO) will be painting large-scale works live outside all day. In alignment with the event's mission of open public access, every single live mural created during the festival will be given away to attendees entirely for free via a drawing at the close of the event (must be in attendance to win).

The Artist Mixer & Spoken Word Cafe

Located upstairs in the IKEA Cafe from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, celebrated poet Marcus Omari will host an official Artist Mixer to kick off the programming. Attendees can grab a drink, connect, and meet local creatives before moving into a curated spoken word poetry hour, a panel chat, and live DJ sets bookending the block.

Bring-Your-Own-Art Open Studio

Artist Safespaces is establishing an outdoor, open-air creative hangout zone equipped with tables, chairs, lounge chairs, and easels. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own art projects and supplies to hang out, co-work, and create alongside other local makers all day.

Featured Activity: Marble Zen Art

Posting up at the festival, Art Supply Warehouse will host a dedicated interactive station. They will be providing free materials exclusively for their signature Marble Zen Art activity, guiding attendees through a therapeutic exercise using specialized ink and coloring markers to reduce stress and anxiety.

Community Wheat-Paste Mural Wall

Managed and led by artist Hugo Chavarria, this interactive installation serves as an anonymous community wall where attendees learn how to wheat-paste and add their handwritten answers to the event's theme question.

Free Artist Headshots

New this year, working artists can get free professional headshots and studio shots from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, shot and led by photographer Jamie Lebowitz of The Inspired Capture (Instagram: @theinspiredcapture).

The activation serves as a live proof-of-concept for Artist Safespaces' ultimate mission: partnering with cities to install free, permanent, library-card-accessible public Art Parks across urban spaces nationwide.
